Education has always been called the great equalizer. Not so, according to my twelve-year old’s school. It’s khaki, that drab yellow-brown of military origin. The color referring to pants. As in: All students will wear khakis.
The concept, to take away choice so we’re all the same, is flawed. The dress code is a missed teaching opportunity. If students don’t learn to make easy decisions–like what to wear–how will they learn to make tough ones?
One size doesn’t fit everyone.
A thought provoking piece. I work in a school with a uniform and it is rather smart and there’s no fashion parades but sensible dress for school. this will bea debate that will go on I’ sure. xx
