January Garden Journal

This year, I’m posting a monthly garden journal. I took these pictures this morning. Happy New Year!

We are enjoying the window boxes on our backyard patio. These were planted mid-December with cyclamen, monkey-faced pansies, and dusty miller. We enjoy them through the windows while we're inside. The plants are all cold hardy, so I don't have to cover them on cold nights.

Swiss Chard tastes great in potato soup. These plants were harvested yesterday, so they aren't as full as they'll be in a week. The sprouts in front are lettuce planted in December.

My broccoli was planted in September. The bed is raised created with a layer of alfalfa, a layer of coastal hay, and a layer of compost. I hand water it every few days.

These succulents are about to bloom. I cover these when the temperature dips below freezing.
